About Kollel Beth HaTalmud

The heart of Torah learning in Melbourne

Kollel Beth HaTalmud has been at the heart of Torah learning in Melbourne's Jewish community for over forty years, creating a unique space dedicated to Torah study for all, regardless of their background or level of observance.

Australia’s pioneer kollel

In 1981, a founding group of 10 families made the journey from Lakewood, New Jersey, to establish the first overseas community Kollel of the renowned Lakewood Yeshiva, under the visionary direction of Rabbi Shneur Kotler ZT"L and Rabbi Nosson Wachtfogel ZT"L.

The group, led by the founding Roshei HaKollel: Rabbi Dovid Nojowitz and Rabbi Binyomin Wurzburger, founded what has become the oldest continuously running kollel in Australia.

What began as a small beis medrash in Balaclava is today a thriving centre of Torah attracting hundreds of people through its doors each week.

What we do

The Kollel's founding vision still guides our future: to bring the depth and breadth of Torah learning to the community. Our Kollel is more than a traditional study hall. It is a bridge connecting timeless Jewish wisdom and values with modern life.

At its core, the Kollel is an institution of advanced scholarship, accredited by TEQSA to bestow a double bachelor degree in Talmud and Rabbinic Thought

It's an intense, full-time 6 year program that seeks the finest scholars who will dedicate themselves to the highest levels of Torah study. Graduates go on to assume rabbinical and leadership roles across Australia and around the world. Students also have the opportunity to stay on after they graduate to further their studies, and at the same time provide mentorship and support for the younger students.

At the same time, we offer community programs, shiurim, and one-on-one learning partnership to cater for every Jew, regardless of age, background, or prior knowledge to learn and grow.
